What is radon, and why should I be concerned about its presence in my workplace?
Radon is a natural gas that comes from rocks and soil. You can’t smell it, see it or taste it. Whilst it disperses outside in the open air and creates little risk, there is the possibility of radon levels building up inside workplaces, creating a health hazard for people using the workspace.
How does radon exposure in the workplace affect employees' health and safety?
If the concentration of radon is really high inside a building, it does pose a serious risk to health. In fact, health studies show that radon is responsible for 3–5% of all lung cancers in the UK – the second largest cause lung cancer.
Are there legal or regulatory requirements for radon testing in workplaces?
Yes. Just like other health and safety risks, the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations, require a radon risk assessment to be recorded if the building is classed as being inside a radon affected area or has an underground area or basement that is occupied for more than one hour a week. If levels of radon are high, its probable that the Ionising Radiation Regulations will then apply and the HSE will need to be notified. Radon is often overlooked but the regulations do apply.
What are the potential financial and operational impacts of radon contamination in a workplace?
This depends on the actual level of radon and it’s location. Usually, radon can be extracted before it enters the building by installing an active sump with a fan. In some cases positive ventilation systems might be required to reduce radon levels. In simple cases, sealing cracks in the floors or improving natural ventilation might be sufficient. So the cost really depends on the levels found and the construction of the building, which determines the best solution. Operationally, if high radon levels are found, the area might need to be temporarily isolated from use and the HSE should be notified.
